Trump Pushes Back on Harris’ Claim He Privately Called Her a “Tough, Smart Customer”

Vice President Kamala Harris’ upcoming memoir 107 Days includes a passage recounting a private concession‐phone call with Donald Trump after the 2024 election. In that passage, Harris says Trump told her: “You are a tough, smart customer, and I say that with great respect.” She alleges he also complimented her by noting, “You also have a beautiful name. I got use of that name, it’s Kamala.”

In a recent interview, Trump rejected the characterization. He said he doesn’t recall using those exact words. He noted that while he was courteous during their interactions, he did not call her a “tough, smart customer.” He maintained he was “nice” but disputed Harris’ account of the phrase.

The disagreement adds to the layered narrative of Harris’ memoir, which also includes other behind-the-scenes reflections from her brief 2024 campaign run. Among those: her frustrations with campaign dynamics, criticism of Joe Biden’s debate performance, and contrasting moments of private versus public behavior from political rivals.
